ChaRisMa 2010 will take place at the University of Waterloo, December 1-3, 2010. According to the Natural Resources Canada, Canada is as vulnerable as elsewhere in the world when it comes to natural hazards. Some examples of catastrophic events occurred in Canada include earthquakes in the Queen Charlotte Islands; tornadoes that have torn through Edmonton, Alberta and Barrie, Ontario; catastrophic landslides in Frank, Alberta and Saint-Jean-Vianney, Quebec; extensive flooding in Manitoba; and devastating ice storms in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec. Canadians should be aware of the potential for damage from natural disasters. Furthermore, smaller but more frequent disasters, such as a river flooding, can sometimes cause more damage and have as much impact on the population as one major event. We aim to bring together project leaders and researchers whose work covers different aspects of this topic independently. This effort will bring about a new sense of synergy to the working environment of all researchers related to this topic, Characteristics, Risk and Management of Natural Hazards. We hope this event be a source of fruitful collaborations and highlight the interdisciplinary characteristic of the subject matter inside Waterloo.
